Day 41 - Benalla

An interesting start to the day - heard it rain a little last night and after we woke this morning it started to rain again. Realising that it could get very slippery where we were camped made the decision to get out as quick as we could and have breakfast etc later. As soon as Ken went outside he found it very very slippery - we got underway and Percy initially just went straight ahead and started to slide sideways until we hit some long grass so into 4WD and fortunately we got some traction to get up a slope to the gravel road. Went a few kms to Stanhope where we had breakfast and got cleaned up from the mud.

Before we left Stanhope went to the local cafe for coffee and morning tea. We had found out last night that we couldn’t go to Winton Wetlands due to the rising water so decided that nearby Benalla would be the target.

After Stanhope it was about 25kms to Tatura where there was a painted water tower.

Tatura was the site of several POW camps in WW2 and is well known for it’s dairy industry.

All this area around Shepparton features painted cows…

As we drive through Shepparton it was raining heavy so no stopping until we reached Benalla at lunch time.

We are at a free camp just near the main street of Benalla and next to the river - it is restricted to 3 caravans for 1 night and we are the only van here tonight.

Benalla is known for it’s murals so as the rain eased off later this afternoon Ken did a walk to get a few…

Tomorrow we are going to Lake Hume near Albury and will spend 3 nights there. Faye’s niece Vicki is currently working at the Ingenia park so it will be great to spend some time with her. She lives in far Nth Qld and does some managing for Ingenia for short term periods.
