Day 30 - Discovery Lagoon Emu Bay

The day started out with the sun shining so after a slow start went to the Island Beehive. They used to also have a cafe but haven’t done so since Covid started and also stopped factory tours.

So all we could do was buy some honey & other stuff and have some Honey Ice Cream which was really delicious. We also had the opportunity to have a talk with Peter Davis who started all this but is now owned and operated by his son. We had met Peter’s brother Robin a couple of times in Nth Qld as he is friends with Faye’s brother Kevin. Peter was very interesting to talk to especially about the 2020 fires and his involvement in trying to get the Government to change the way they do things to prevent it happening again. He was the face of KI on TV a lot during the fires.

The bee population on KI is a pure strain of Ligurian bees which originally came from Italy in 1881. It is now the only genetically pure population of Ligurian bees in the world. KI is effectively quarantined as no honey can be brought onto the island. And the island is far enough from the mainland that other bees cannot cross. The honey you buy here is unfiltered and raw. We bought 2 different types so will be interested when we get home to try them. They have stopped taste testing also due to covid!

After that went uptown for morning tea and by then it had started to rain so had a quick look around - bought some lunch and other shopping and came back to the van for a restful afternoon.

We leave here in the morning to travel back near to Penneshaw as we leave on the 8.30 ferry on Saturday morning so have to check in before 8am and don’t want to have to travel too far.

The last couple of days they have had to cancel some sailings of the ferry due to the wind conditions. Several sailings today were cancelled and the latest update for tomorrow is for major disruptions so hopefully it will be OK for Saturday or we may have a longer holiday on KI than we planned.
