Day 26 - Western KI (Cape Borda)

Well for a time today we were the furthest west of anyone on Kangaroo Island!

Travelled to the north west section of Flinders Chase National Park at Cape Borda and it’s nearby surrounds and for most of the time we were the only ones around.

Some of the road along the way…

Came across heaps of Yellow tail black cockatoos along the road.

The lighthouse and it’s buildings were saved from the 2020 bush fires although it was burnt all around.

Of course there was a walk to the coastline to be done…

Treking poles can in very handy.

Back along the road a little way to Scott Cove…

And then a little more to the cemetery that was used for the lighthouse workers…

Harvey’s Return was the place that the supply ships brought supplies to and they had to get up the cliffs and then 8km to the lighthouse. They had a rail system up the cliff. Ken walked to a place where you could see the Cove but it was a very steep walk (grade 4 very difficult) to go right down. We decided it was not for us!!

Faye just checked out the flowers whilst Ken walked. Had a good talk with a NP ranger about the fires and the amazing regrowth. The trees that did not recover were generally burnt out in the centre of the trunk.

Also the cliffs in this area are the highest in South Australia. That’s the reason it is a lower lighthouse than normal.

Tomorrow we leave here and go to near Emu Bay on the north coast near Kingscote the biggest town on KI.
