Day 27 - Gwalia

A slow start to the day as only about 130km to travel. We enjoyed Laverton as part of our Goldfields journey. Had morning tea along the road and it turned out that there heaps of birds nearby as well as flowers. Faye went exploring with the camera but couldn't get some of the birds.

There are now more flowers along the way as evidenced by the photos below..

Towards Leonora we went into a lookout to see the Murrin Murrin Nickel and cobalt operations. It is a huge site and is said to be a world leader in the processing of these metals.

We arrived at Gwalia for lunch and then had a good look at the Museum. It is on the site of the Sons of Gwalia gold mine which still operates as an open cut mine. It opened in 1896 as an underground and still produces gold. The museum is right on the edge of the open cut.

Faye still cant resist getting into old vehicles and the little steam engine is very significant as its name is "Ken"... So the above photo is of the 2 Kens! It was used for many years in the mining operation.

The house "Hoover House" was the mine manager's and was built by the first mine manager Herbert Hoover. He was an American who eventually became the 31st President of the USA.

We are camped at the Museum site as they allow fully self contained RV's to stay. It has been extremely windy so the van is rocking a little as we are on the top of a hill!

We will look at the old township in the morning as many buildings are still standing.

Going on to Leinster tomorrow and from there turn further west towards the coast.
