Day 26 - Laverton

Yesterday was very hot (29) and overnight so for the first time since we left home the summer PJ's came out.

Today was around 27. It was a day of exploring the area. Went to the lookout first and then to the Explorers Hall of Fame. This was excellent and had been done very professionally using audio and video etc. They have a cafe so morning tea there. Laverton is named after Dr Laver who was a medical Dr who rode a bicycle from Coolgardie to look for gold and also practice.

After that we went to Windarra where Poseidon Nickel have their mine - about 28km from town. Most people know of the Poseidon boom around 1969/70. It is an underground mine and has been closed down since 1994 but is now going to produce again. There was activity on site and new huts etc. The mine is being refurbished and I think is now owned by Twiggy Forest.

Back to town for lunch at the local take away - pie (home made) and chips - the best we have had!

After that went out onto the Great Central Road for 51kms to check out Giles Breakaways. This is the road that goes to Uluru and this bit was in good condition but very very dusty.

This is the start of the Great Victoria Desert which is the biggest desert in Australia.

Now just resting. Tomorrow we go to Leonora.
