Day 27 - Spirits Bay, Cape Reinga

Left last night's camp around 9am and went a few km's down the road to do 2 walks in into Kauri trees...

The photos don't do them justice - the first one is the 4 Sisters where 4 trees share a common base and the 2nd photo is of the largest Kauri tree in NZ. Height is 51.5m with a girth of 13.8m. It is called God of the forest and a sign near it says that it is about 2000 years old and it may have been a seedling during the lifetime of Christ.

Had morning tea at Tane Muhuta which comprised coffee followed by real fruit ice cream. All the maori’s were very friendly and helpful. Suggested we take a ferry over Hokianga Harbour to save an hours travel on the state highways. This was where maori’s  first landed in NZ.

This brought us to Kaitaia for a late lunch at Maccas (needed their wifi) then onto Cape Reinga arriving there about 4pm.

The views up were great and the walk to the lighthouse was very well done (about 1km).

This is the most northerly point of New Zealand and is where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean. You can actually see a line in the water where the 2 currents meet.

This now means that on this holiday we have been to all the extremities of the North Island. North, South, East and West. So far we have done 4,000km.

Came back about 25km’s from the top and then 15km gravel road into Spirits Bay where we are camped for the night. Many people had suggested this as a “must do”. It is a beautiful spot and wild horses are roaming around across a creek.

A full day but very enjoyable. All up about 270km - but NZ roads are VERY windy...

Tomorrow we go to Paihia and the Bay of Islands.
