The birds were near Cape Palliser and no idea what they are. Had a couple of stops along the way - at a coffee hut in Pahiatua for morning tea and then at Carterton for ice creams (at a fruit barn where they mix real fruit of your choice with vanilla ice cream - mixed in a machine & then into a cone).
Also went to Paua World shop and factory so Faye could buy!! Inspected a The Warehouse shop to get a glass coffee plunger to replace one in the motorhome that we broke! (Didn't shut a door when mobile).
Arrived at the Pinnacles around 2pm and did a nearly 2 hour walk to view them.
A fascinating place - you walk up a creek bed to see them.
Then onto Cape Palliser lighthouse. To climb to the lighthouse there are 250 steps - straight up.
This is the most southern point of the North Island and you can view the South Island, including the snow capped peaks.
Not far from the lighthouse there is NZ’s largest seal colony. They are everywhere and we spent a long time watching them. We thought they were all on the rocks but Faye walked in front of a bush on a grassed area and one scared the daylights out of her as it growled and ran right past her. Faye screamed very loud! Fortunately it didn’t attack her. She says it is NOT funny....
Tonight we are camped at Ngawi which is nearby and it is a beautiful spot - had a nice sunset and looking across to the South Island.
To Wellington tomorrow.
