Day 27 : Tumut

A day to have a look at some of The Snowy Hydro Scheme.

First stop was to Blowering Dam and power station.

Had morning tea at the base of the dam. It is a huge dam and holds 3 times the water of Sydney Harbour. As it is now the end of summer the water level is down to 38%. It is the lowest of the dams and for the whole Snowy system it's primary source of water is snow melt plus some from rainfall.

Was told that Blowering levels do change during the year as it is the last one and had to ensure that water is released to comply with irrigation demands and town/ environment requirements downstream.

Next dam going upstream is Jounama.

It is a smaller area and the town of Talbingo is on it's shoreline. Had lunch there courtesy of takeaway at the local supermarket.

Next one up is Talbingo...

This dam wall is the biggest in the system (not water capacity) and the water level is kept high. The Power station has the biggest capacity of the whole snowy system and the water it releases goes into Jounama and is then pumped back to Talbingo reservoir.

Most would be aware of the proposed Snowy 2 scheme. We were told that their are drillers everywhere and they say it is 99% likely to proceed. That new scheme will pump water from Talbingo back to Tantangara Dam to enable water to back through the whole system again. It will incorporate a new power station 800m underground.

Then back to fuel up and shopping to get us home. That will be on Friday.

Going to Yass tomorrow.
