Day 25 : Tumbarumba

A very relaxed night last night next to the Murray River. When we went to bed we left the windows and door open next to the river to listen to the rocks quietly singing. Around 3am the singing seemed to be much louder so we closed everything on the river side. When we got up this morning we found out why - a lot more water was coming down the river! We were told that the amount varies each day depending on what water is released from the Snowy Hydro scheme. The last dam release was not far up river from where we were.

Being Sunday we slept in and had the Sunday pancakes around 10am. We enjoyed our time there so didn't leave until pm as we didn't have far to travel.

Our first stop was the Southern Cloud Memorial. The Southern Cloud was on a passenger flight from Sydney to Melbourne in 1931 when it crashed in the Snowy Mountains. It wasn't found for 27 years when a worker on the snowy scheme found it in 1958.

The wreckage was found in a valley behind the mountains in photo 4. Photo 6 is across to the Mt Kosciuszko range.

Next stop was at the Paddy's River Falls...

We walked to near the base. After a rest there we came onto Tumbarumba and are staying in a designated RV overnight parking just behind the main street.

Tomorrow on to Tumut for 2 nights.

  1. Good morning Faye &Ken,
I have been following your blog for some time now. We actually followed in your footsteps doing your Qld trip part of the way.
Coincidently we also have a Jurgen 2405 van and like you have just returned from our trip across the Snowy Mts Hwy.
We love free camping and some of the lovely places you have just been I will be planning on visiting in the future.
Finally I wanted to recommend Jounama Ck across the hwy from Talbingo ( I am sure you know of it). We went there for a look and ended up staying 4 nights. Met some lovely people only 3 other vans (they too found it hard to leave, a lovely dip in the cool stream on a hot day).
I realise you may not be headed that way, just down the road from Tumut.
Love all your pictures, very special.
Safe travel regards Gary & Deb.
P.s. We are on the central coast. San Remo.
