Day 17 : Beechworth

A slow start this morning and then to the old Beechworth Gaol for a coffee and then a tour of the facility. It was built in 1864 and most of it is in the original state and the granite was quarried on the site.

These days its claim to fame is around Ned Kelly. Kelly was first in this prison in 1870 and served for horse stealing. After the siege at Glenrowan in 1880 he was held here for some months pending his trial. He was held in cell 30 and you can see it in the photos below. Except it didn't have a toilet in those days!

Ned Kelly's mother was also held there on attempted murder of a policeman in 1878 after a confrontation at the Kelly family home. Also saw her cell. The gaol also held 20 Kelly sympathizers in 1879 in an attempt to limit support for the Kelly gang.

Then went to Yackandandah for a drive and had lunch at the Beechworth Bakery there. This village is in a lovely setting and is a Morpeth style town which attracts heaps of tourists.

Had a walk around town and it rained from time to time. On the way back had a look at Woolshed Falls. Last photo.

Tomorrow we are moving to Bright for 4 nights.
