Day 16 : Beechworth

Today we started by doing a 5km Gorge drive around the edge of town.

Then a compulsory stop was morning tea at the Beechworth Bakery. Followed by a walk around the shops and Historic Area.

Beechworth's history is around gold mining and we talked to a guy who has started searching and has found quite a few ounces around the area this week. Photos include the Town Hall and old Court House.

Some of the things we saw were...

The 1st photo is Chinese Burning Towers in the cemetery where 2000 Chinese are buried behind. The 2nd is a golden horseshoe to commemorate a local candidate in 1855 who rode a horse with golden horseshoes to the polling booth. Then a Powder magazine built in 1860 where gunpowder used in gold mining was stored. Then the bakery, post office and old Bank of NSW (Westpac) buildings.

Had lunch back at the van and then went to see the Butt Butt tree as well as Billson's Brewery which now produces a huge range of cordials. Stopped making beer back in the 1950's but has been making cordial mixers for 135 years. They use spring water which runs under the building. Bought 2 different flavours. It also houses a Carriage Museum.

The first one was a hearse and the second built for the NSW Governor.
