Day 17 - White Cliffs

An interesting day which started with a 3 hour bus tour including the history of how opal was discovered back in the 1800’s.

White Cliffs even has a couple of murals.

The house in the centre was the original Post Office and the 2nd oldest building in town. Below that is the `Community hall and the Sports Club.

All the cricketers will know of Bill O’Reilly - the oval is named after him as he was born in White Cliffs. An interesting visit to the “solar farm” which was built in 1980 as an experimental solar which initially produced steam to produce electricity. It ceased operation in 2005 and is now maintained as a Heritage site as it was the world’s first commercial solar power station. It pioneered much of how solar is used today.

The first house is the oldest in town and was the police barracks.

The photos above show how the opal fields are now. Still some mining but not very much opal now.

The last part of the tour was a visit to a home dugout. It is a personal home so no photos were allowed! We got the 2nd photo above before being told - that is the circular  kitchen at the front of the house. An incredible place to visit. At the back of the house we climbed 40 steps to the hill above where the other photos were taken.

Had lunch at the general store and then had a drive around ourselves & to an opal place for afternoon tea. The last photo is a “pineapple” opal which White Cliffs is famous for. The first photo is the underground motel.

Leaving here tomorrow & travelling ‘The Long Paddock” which is the Cobb Highway from Wilcannia  and the plan is Ivanhoe.
