Day 12 - Milparinka

Only a shorter trip today as we decided to stay at Milparinka as it is very hot and its nice to have a powered site. We were last here many years ago and a lot of money has been spent redeveloping this heritage town.

This country was travelled by the explorer Sturt in the 1840’s  and $5.8m has been spent setting up a touring route “Sturts Steps” and it was officially launched last month. Lots of the signs you have seen in our photos and the many sculptures are as a result of this new tourist promotion.

We drive out to Depot Glen where Sturts party had to stay for 6 months due to drought. His 2nd in charge Poole died at Depot Glen in 1845 and was buried there.

His men built a cairn on top of Mt Poole - photo above. We didn’t do the climb as Ken’s foot is still very sore and it was 36 degrees.

Tomorrow to  Broken Hill for 3 nights. This morning the turn indicators on the van wouldn’t work so will need to get that fixed at Broken Hill.
