Day 62 - Thargomindah

The temperature dropped last night and it has been much cooler today. Back into coats etc!

After a late breakfast we went for a walk along the Bulloo River. Since we were last here lots of years ago the Council have done heaps of improvements and the walks around town have all been sealed with night solar lighting.

As part of the walk we went to the Tourist Info Centre and then to the local roadhouse for coffee before walking back to the van.

The buildings above are the Council Offices, Tourist Centre, the War Memorial and the old historic hospital.

The sculpture relates to water drawn from the Artesian Basin. And the river crossing is the old Cobb & Co route.

After lunch we did a drive to see a few sights. The last 3 photos is the site of the first hydro power plant in Australia. It was used to supple power for street lighting being the 3rd place in the world to have that. The first 2 were London and Paris. Quite a historic place.

A few other buildings around town. The bottom ones are the old jail!

Also quite a few murals around town…

Thargomindah is a very tidy town and the people show a pride as the Council strongly supports tourism.

Tomorrow we will stop near Eulo.

We have now decided on a different way home. Have booked into Cunnamulla for 2 nights and then will stay in Qld for 2/3 days going further east before heading into NSW via Mungindi. This gives us a shorter trip in NSW to get home and avoids the western areas of the state. Should be home Tuesday or Wednesday next week.
