Day 52 - Lara Wetlands

Only just over 100km today to a real oasis in the bush.

Left Aramac around 10am with some stops  on the way to Barcaldine caused by roadside flowers…

Photos above was last nights sunset at Aramac.

At Barcaldine took a few photos around the area of The Tree of Knowledge which was the founding site of the Australian Labor Party in 1891.

The sculpture is of a striking shearer in the early days fighting under the Eureka flag. The artist is the same Aramac lady that did the others on the Trail.

Also found a bakery for morning tea, also an IGA and a hardware store for supplies…

Only another 45 kms then to Lara Wetlands which is a bush camping site on a cattle station. The station road in was  13km and in really good condition.

We were here by lunch time and spent much of the afternoon sitting looking at the wetlands and birds. They say they have 127 different species of birds.

Have already taken heaps of photos but will leave those until tomorrows blog. Tonight they had a bush camp dinner for $25 each which included 3 hours of country music and a 3 course meal. The food was great and the couple who were singing were pretty good.

The bush camp was set up about 5/6 years ago but before it opened the husband was killed nearby in a helicopter accident whilst mustering. The wife still opened the camp but it was later sold to a lady with 3 children who already owned other properties in the area. She was there tonight and its her daughter who is the the photo above with the singers. The girl also sang a couple of solos.

We are staying here for 2 nights so lots of bird watching tomorrow….
