Day 55 - Alice Springs

Well it was a big day today as we travelled just over 400km in a loop trip in the West Macdonnells using the Red Centre way.

The first photos are the early part of the day and the finish. Left at 8am and got back at 7pm so the sunset photo as we travelled back to The Alice.

The 2nd photo is the grave of Rev John Flynn who founded the Royal Flying Doctors.

Our next stop was at Hermannsburg to have a look the Old Lutheran Mission. It was established in 1877 by German Lutherans and they still have a Finke River Mission at Hermannsburg and in Alice Springs. The mission site was handed back to the original indigenous owners in 1982 and the buildings fell  into   disrepair so the Lutheran Mission took back management 5 years ago as an historic site.

One of the boys who went through the mission was Albert_Namatjira who was a famous painter - 5th photo. We had a lovely morning tea in one of the original houses - 3rd photo.

From there we travelled to Gosse Bluff which is a very large impact crater...

The top and bottom photos are panoramas taken inside the crater showing the rim and the 2nd one from a lookout. It is completely circular and several km’s across.

Then onto Redbank Gorge where did a walk into the gorge. Was harder than we thought as it did involve a lot of rock scrambling but we made it...

Had a late lunch after we got back to Percy. Then as we approached Glen Helen we visited a memorial to Colin Stace who was Faye’s brother in law and he died whilst driving there in 2000. Some family had placed a stake and billy at the site and Colin’s son Ken put a plaque on it in 2011.

Faye had brought a rock from Gosse Bluff to add to it.

A little further down the road was Glen Helen Gorge...

Ormiston Gorge was next but as we had walked the full 3 to 4 hour walk previously we just did a short one to the waterhole and initial section...

Two more stops on the way back was the Ochre Pits and Ellery Creek big hole...

By the time we got back we were just a little tired so a lighter day is planned for tomorrow. But we did enjoy the day and the various sights.
