Day 38 - Geraldton

The warmest day of the trip so far. Sunny in Geraldton and was a beautiful day to visit the memorial to HMAS Sydney which was sunk off the coast here in 1941 by a German ship. The biggest lost ever for the Australian Navy and 645 lives were lost. The actual wreck was only found in 2008. It is a magnificent memorial and a tour guide showed us around to reveal many things of significance.

The photo on the left is a replica of the bow and the lady figure to represent all the women waiting for their men's return. The top is 645 bird figures. Also is 2 walls with all their names and photos of the ship.

After that we had a look around town - it is a beautiful city. Then had lunch at Dome cafe. More sightseeing and then to Woolworths to restock.

The lighthouse is the highest in Australia and the only one in WA made of steel.

Going tonight to have a look at the memorial when lit up.

  1. We like Dome in WA. There is one near Andrew & Clare's that we have been to often and there was also one in Esperance we went to about 4 years ago.
    Take care, gb
