Day 24 - Niagara Dam Kookynie

A nice sunrise at Lake Ballard and breakfast outside the van. The sculptures were casting shadows so lots of people out taking photos.

Back to Menzies for morning tea at the Outback Cafe and then some small van repairs after 100km of gravel roads. Had to replace the hinges on one cupboard - had some on board as they are a known weakness on Jurgens.

Then onto Kookynie which had population of many thousands in the gold rush days. Now only a few live there but the Grand Hotel is still operating and the building is basically the same as when it was built over 100 years ago. It is a well known outback pub and we had a great lunch there. Sat at the bar to eat with 4 other NSW travellers.

Our overnight spot was only 10km to Niagara Dam - heaps of vans etc here tonight. It is a lovely spot. The dam was built in 1897 for the railways but never used for any purpose.

That's our van in the first photo. Did 2 walks - firstly around the perimeter of the dam and then along some breakaways. About 4kms in all.

We are early for most of the wildflowers in this area, however, there are still many flowers around and these photos are from today.

Tomorrow we will go to Laverton for 2 nights.

  1. When our son first went to WA he worked at a gold mine not far from Laverton for near 3 years so the name is familiar.
    Enjoying the photos.
