Day 12 - Buchan & trip to Snowy River National Park

Had a lovely(& huge) meal last night at Buchan Caves Hotel.

A quiet night & first up this morning was coffee at the Roadhouse.

P

Then to the Bluff Reserve just outside town.

Todays journey was north from Buchan into the Snowy River National Park. Mainly sealed road until the last 20km.

Our destination was McKillops Bridge and as you see from the above sign the last 11km was extremely narrow & windy. Fortunately we didn’t meet any oncoming vehicle. In some places one would have
to reverse a very long way as it would be impossible to pass most of the time.

Finally got to the bridge which crosses the Snowy River.

It was built in 1932 & the week before the official opening a flood completely destroyed it except for the pylons. It was then rebuilt with an additional 5 metres added to the pylons. Opened as it currently is in early 1935.

Then returned the same way - & still didn’t see anyone else except some motorbikes.

Did a 400m downhill walk to a lookout over the biggest gorge in Victoria. The Little River Gorge.

And a brief stop at Little River Falls & then T Tree Falls but not much water.

The last photo is the Buchan Quarry!

Leaving here tomorrow - booked into a hipcamp farm stay just outside Bairnsdale for 3 nights.
