Day 13 - Wairoa

A beautiful sunset at East Cape as well as a glorious sunrise this morning...

Left around 8.30am after daylight saving started today. So 3 hours difference now until Aussie starts.

The waterfall was near where we were camped and the tree is the oldest and largest Pohutukawa tree in NZ - at Te Araroa.

The church is St Marys at Tikitiki and the interior has maori carvings everywhere. It is stunning -even all over the ceilings and walls.

Then on to Anaura Bay where Captain Cook landed in Oct 1769. This trip passed huge mountain ranges which are the tallest non volcanic mountains in NZ.

By lunch time we were at Tolaga Bay, another of Cook’s stops. Bought lunch and then ate it at the wharf which is 660m long and the longest in NZ. Of course we had to walk the jetty which adjoins some interesting cliffs.

Tonight we are freedom camped near the beach at Wairoa. Just after we arrived some maori’s came over to see if they could get some salt. They were cooking lambs tails on the beach and had forgotten the salt. They offered to give us some to try - no! Faye was amazed that they ate them. Ken went over to see them cooked - they leave the wool on and it gets burnt off. They assured me it tastes like sweet chicken! The young girl said it is a maori thing.

We will spend some time in Napier tomorrow and then go further south somewhere...
