Day 71 - Mendoran

A VERY cold night at Bourke but a beautiful sunrise - 1st photo.

Today was the biggest distance in one day towing the caravan - 429km. We had morning tea at Coolabah (with the parrots and the other bird) then lunch at Nyngan. The emus all ran across in front of us during that period.

Ken lived at Nyngan for a year when he was 17 and we put a photo of where he lived on Facebook today. The photo below is the Bank where he worked. We bought lunch at the bakery and the lady who served us was around town when Ken was there. She was 15 then. The pelicans were on the Bogan River at Nyngan and were playing with a duck.

'

It was obvious that the countryside from Bourke on had had good rain as it looked good. There was no roadkill at all today so obviously the animals didn't need to come near the road for feed.

After lunch came via Warren to Mendoran where we are camped alongside the Castlereagh River. The country through that section...

We will be home tomorrow so this will the last blog entry.

Some statistics from our holiday are:

Days 72

Distance 9613 Km (by the time we get home). So an average travel of 134km per day.

Petrol used: 1512 litres

Average cost $1.57 per litre (premium petrol)

Average consumption: 15.73 litre per 100 km

Ken always does a budget and he was very happy that we came in 30% below budget. Distance was spot on but consumption was better, average cost was lower but the big saver was accommodation costs. This was our first major holiday with this van with an ensuite, solar on the roof and a grey water tank but we didn't know how much we would free camp. As it turned out we only paid for 8 nights in a standard caravan park as it was so easy to free camp. Getting water was never a problem - the solar worked great - dump points everywhere etc. We used an app called Wikicamps to find sites.

So that is it. We have had a great holiday and if you have been following us we trust that you have enjoyed the diary and photos.

Thank you for joining us

Faye and Ken
