Tomorrow starts Day 1 of a holiday to North Qld. Everything is packed & ready to go. Ken got clearance from his Dr yesterday after his recent operation. The itinerary is flexible & on current plans we will be away for about 10 weeks.
As usual Ken tries to find roads that we haven’t travelled before but that’s getting much harder these days. This trip we are going to zigzag a little but basically going up via Goondiwindi to Miles, then to Isla Gorge National Park & then mostly follow the Fitzroy Development Road, joining the Bruce Highway north of Mackay. From there along the Bruce Highway to Innisfail where we turn off to the Atherton Tablelands.
We will be spending sometime with Faye’s brother & wife (Kevin & Pat) at Quinola Lakes near Malanda. Around mid August we will leave the van behind & go up Cape York. Will be spending a few days at Mapoon (north of Weipa) where Faye’s nephew & his wife live (David & Alana) where Alana teaches. It is then our plan to go to the tip of Cape York before returning to Quinola Lakes. So will be in the tent for a while…
When we leave Quinola to come home our current plans are to come via Normanton & then down via Cloncurry, Boulia etc to Birdsville. This would be our 3rd visit there & we hope to go out into the Simpson Desert for 2/3 days if the weather is OK. Then we have 2 options – & this will depend on the weather & road conditions – either down the Birdsville Track (the preferred option) to the Flinders Ranges & come home via Broken Hill or to come home via western Qld and Bourke.
We will be doing the blog each day so feel free to come along on the journey with us. There will be occasions where we will not have mobile reception but the blog will catch up when we get reception. Thanks for reading…….
