Day 22 - Port Welshpool

This town is most known for its Long Jetty. A jetty here was first built in 1856 & the long jetty was built in 1936. It had commercial use and was used during the Second World War and when the Bass Strait Oil fields were being developed. Also trade with Tasmania was common. In the early 1990’s a ferry operated from here as a vehicle & passenger service to Tasmania.

Much of it was burnt out in a fire and was closed in 2004 for safety. Then in 2012 it was restored now with concrete decking and facilities for fishermen. Originally it had a slipway as well. It is now 870m long and is curved as the last section runs parallel to the main deep water channel for boats to use the jetty. It was curved as it was designed to by used by trains for loading/unloading. However, a train line was never installed.

The Diving Bell was used for underwater work in Bass Strait.

The first photo above was a winch used to slip boats on the original jetty.

Then we went to Agnes Falls about 14km inland from here.

Then did a loop via Toora back to base.

It is a dairy farming area. Along the way saw these 2 carvings…

Great use of an old tree!

Tomorrow we move to Inverloch for 3 nights.
